Our Story

Matthew Allchurch Architects - established in 2000 - has grown from Matt's kitchen table, to a space below his flat where his cats used to wander into the studio, to the multidisciplinary riverside Boathouse Design Studio on the banks of the Thames at Teddington Lock.

With this, the practice and the people have grown - now with a breadth of experience and projects across a broad range of sectors, as well as a cohort of wonderful clients. The practice has clients with projects numbering into the hundreds, and the team has fostered long-term relationships with clients and consultants alike. These friends of the practice are part of the MAA culture, whether it is popping to the Boathouse for a coffee, going fishing on the River Itchen with Matt, catching up at the pub, paintballing, go-karting or fitting in a site tour - MAA embraces the collaborative nature of architecture.

Our people are at the centre of our ethos. We are a diverse and inclusive practice, focussed on the wellness of our team. We are committed to providing an engaging and nurturing environment for our people and are very proud of our Investors in People Gold status. MAA has broadened its leadership team, Gary Sutherland & Valeriy Petrushechkin have joined Matt as Directors, with Claire Richardson now as our Head of Finance & Communication.

MAA is a founding member of The Boathouse Design Studio, a multidisciplinary hub of local businesses that provides a unique environment for project collaboration opportunities for our clients. It is important that our Studio environment reflects our values. Working from this lovingly restored Grade II listed building, the wellbeing benefits that come from working in a natural, social and sustainable environment are reflective and impactful at every level & stage of our work.

The Boathouse, a dedicated co-working space for creatives, comprises open plan office spaces, casual and formal meeting rooms, communal kitchens, showers for cyclists, covered cycle parking, a table tennis table and a riverside terrace that, in the summer months, plays host to the Flying Cloud Café.

The Boathouse fosters creative collaboration and a community atmosphere. Fancy joining us? Find more information here.
